GRANT, Ulysses S. (1822-1895). Commander in chief who brought victory to the Union, President. War-Date Autograph Note Signed, “U.S. Grant Lt. Gen.” reads in full “Washington D.C. Feby. 11th, 1865, I would respectfully recommend that Brig. Gen. T.F. Meagher, per the condition of his command in coming from Tenn. to Annapolis, and per his condition in receipt of orders for their future movement be mustered out of the service.” On verso of letter from Major R.N. Scott, addressed to Maj. Genl. Halleck, that reads in small part: “... In compliance with your order for me to state what I know in reference to the reports that Brig. Gen. T.F. Meagher US Vols was intoxicated at Annapolis Md. during the recent embarkation of his command...That Genl. Meagher arrived at Annapolis..I saw him board of Steamer Ariel about 8 oclock...during my interview I became convinced from his appearance, manner and convesation that he was too much under the influence of liquor to attend to duty. I had called upon him to explain what orders had been given to his troops by me under your instructions, but he seemed incapable of understanding me and I soon left him...Genl. Meagher was drunk...one of his own staff, Capt. Flagg,...was present at our interview remarked after we left the ship, that he was sorry to see the General in that condition...” Fine. General Thomas Francis Meagher, was found to be drunk at Antietam where he fell off his horse, soon resigned but his resignation was revoked. He drowned on July 1, 1867, while during a drinking party aboard the SS Thompson near Fort Benton, Montana Territory, he fell into the Missouri River and drowned.
