An intriguing war-date Union soldier’s affidavit by Pvt. John McAuley, Co. E, 2nd Tenn. (Mounted) Infantry 4pp. legal size folio, Decatur, Tenn., Nov. 6, 1865 concerning his being captured by Forrest’s command, and needing money to return home, after being paroled, in very small part: “…John McAuley…aged eighteen years…declares…he is not indebted…to the United States…whatever…[as] a private in Company (E) in the Second Regiment of Tennessee Mounted Infantry…on the third day of April…1864…whilst on his way from his regiment…for the purpose of getting recruits…was captured by the Rebel General Forest’s command and…sent directly to the Rebel Prison at Andersonville…he was held…to the twenty ninth day of April…1865 at which…time he was exchanged. He was sent to…hospital…being sick…with black scurvy and diarrhea…where he remained…until the 7th…July 1865…the commander of the Post at Paducah…refused him transportation giving…that his…regiment…was mustered out of service…he could not proceed further for the want of money…he has never received any pay for his service whilst in the service of the United States…”.
