War-date 3pp. 8vo., ink inscribed Union soldier’s letter written by Corp. Ernest Luzt, Co. K, 162nd New York Vol. “1st Division U. S. A. Gen’l. Hospital, Ward F, Beaufort, S. C., Feb. 12, 1865”, to his parents concerning the number and types of wounded coming into his hospital during Sherman’s drive to capture Charleston, in part: “…this morning about 150 wounded & sick some from Sherman’s army and some from Hatcher’s. One boy out of my co…came here…had his arm shot off by a cannon ball…Sherman is the other side of Branchville…he took Longstreet & all of his force. The 25 C.[avalry], 127th, 56 N. Y. is under Gen. Hatch. They are going to Charleston by the way of the R. Road. They had a fight yesterday…the 127th N. Y. sent 50 wounded to this place…if our regt was in the fight they must have lost a good many…”. Luzt was wounded near Deep Bottom, Va. during the previous summer. Some age spots, and soiling, else very good.
