January 20, 1865, Letter by Union Blacksmiths of the Army of Georgia, Choice Extremely Fine. Autograph Letter Signed by four blacksmiths of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Div., 20th Corps (members primarily from New York), stationed in the field near Hardeeville, SC, 9.75" x 7.75", doublesided. The blacksmiths certify that they mistakenly branded a "private horse" belonging to Lt. John A. Fox, Adjt. 2nd Mass. Infantry, and that the horse does not belong to the U.S. Army. Verso has two signed notes by two senior officers confirming the "facts" of the case. Clean letter with a few water stains smudging a few words. Neat content.
