MEIGS, Montgomery (1816 - 1892) Union brigadier general and Quartermaster General, he buried his son in Mary Lee's rose garden at Arlington. Manuscript Letter Signed, “M.C. Meigs” 1p. quarto, March 18, 1870, Washington, D.C., on Quartermaster General’s Office letterhead, addressed to R.B.S. Hale, Special Counsel of Treasury Dept. and reads: “...Your letter...to the Sec. of War, relative to certain books in the Quartermaster General’s Office, necessary for the defence of ‘abandoned and captured property cases in the Court of Claims’ has been referred to this office. Referring thereto you are respectfully informed that the Secretary of War has authorized production of books and that if this office is notified of teh convenient time and place they will be produced for examination of the court...” Fine.
