SLOUGH, JOHN P. (1829 - 1867) Union brigadier general who defied Canby's orders to succesfully engage Confederates at Glorieta Pass in New Mexico, defended Harpers Ferry in the Valley Campaign, mortally wounded following a political dispute in a Santa Fe poolroom. Rare war-date signature with rank in another hand, cut from a letter: "With much respect Your obdt. Servt Jno. B. Slough Brig. Genl. Mily. Gov. Alex[andri]a". Corner chipped affecting one letter in rank, mounting traces on verso, overall very good.
