HOWARD, Oliver Otis (1830-1909). Union general who commanded at Gettysburg and Antietam, lost an arm and gained a Medal of Honor at Seven Pines. Typed Letter Signed, “Oliver Otis Howard” as major General U.S. Army, 1p. octavo, October 18, 1898, Burlington, Vermont, addressed to Col. Wilmon Blackmar, it reads in part: “My conscience smote me for taking advantage of you on the cards, but my heart is so absorbed in my ‘Lincoln Memorial’ as my last throw for Christian Education among those strongly loyal mountain boys and girls, that I know you will forgive me...” VG.
