MILES, Nelson Appleton (1839-1925) Served in the Civil War and was wounded in action on four occassions. After the war he became one of the best Indian fighters in the army and captured Chief Joseph, Geronimo, and Sitting Bull. He retired as after the Spanish-American war with the rank of lieutenant general. Autograph Letter Signed, “Nelson A. Miles Major-General U.S.A” 2p. octavo, May 21, 1895, “Would be glad to go...direct to the hotel and remain quietly until the memorial exercises of the following day. I will be glad to see any member of the Committee, but would prefer not to have any other demonstrations...” Mounted, else VG.
