An authentic issue of Gentleman’s Magazine, October 1736, 64pp., disbound, near fine. From the interior, is a 4 page printing of “An Account of the Duties or Impositions payable by any Act .. in any of the British Plantations in America.” The individual colonies of South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Massachusettes and New Hampshire are each listed with line item duties. The colonies of New York, Maryland, and South Carolina have duties placed on Negroes. For example, in South Carolina, “Negro Slaves from Africa, above 10 years” import duties of 10 pounds; under 10 years is 5 pounds. Then “Every Negro above 10 from America” 50 pounds; under 10 5 pounds. Then, “Every Spanish Negroe, Indian, Molotto” 150 pounds. New York’s duty was 2 pouns on Slave from Africa above 4 years old.
