Manuscript Document Signed, “John P. Adams per R. Adams” 1pp. oblong octavo, February 23, 1857, being a slave hire for $27.55 “in full of Hire of my hands on the new State Capital to the 1st instant....” Docketed on verso “Hire of Hands on Capitol to Feb. 1st 1857.” Fine condition. Most of the documents pertaining to the capital building were burned during theCivil War, making these documents rare and highly desirable. Major John R. Niemsee began construction on the State Capital building in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1854, work was slowed during the Civil War and halted during Sherman’s Carolina Campaign, when it received some damage due to Sherman’s leveling the city.
