A sixth plate ambrotype of a black women holding a white baby with gold paint accents, in a split, embossed leather case, 1858. There is silvering around edges, accretion at child's forehead, dust, split case with minor wear, velvet pad lightly faded, not examined out of case. Although no direct documentation, the previous owner does provide background. The item descended through the Daunis family. The white child is Effie Daunis (1858-1921), daughter of Martha Nichols Daunis (1829-1865) wife of Sylvain Theogene Daunis (1826-1890), Thibodaux, Louisiana. After the war broke out, Martha took Effie and her sister Mattie (Ten Broeke) to her family in Middlebury, Vermont. Martha died there in 1865 and is buried in Middlebury. Effie is also buried in Middlebury (digital output of the grave stone is included).
