A good pre-Lincoln inaugural letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by J. C. Field, Unadilla, [N. Y.], Feb. 4, 1861, in part: "…I have commenced in good earnest & in the midst of all the excitement about Secession keep a stiff upper lip. [I] voted with a will for Lincoln & the Republican ticket…[and] would do so again…[I] am opposed to all compromises & would not if I were to have my way budge a single inch for South Carolina…for all the combined foray of Slavedom…yet [I] avow myself a strong friend of the Union as it is or rather as it was…".
