CDV with caption on the front of the mount, “"Rebecca, Charley & Rosa, slave children from New Orleans." The image shows two girls and Charley in a photographer’s studion, well dressed and charming. The reverse identifies the New York photographer as Chas. Paxson and provides the selling point “The nett proceeds from the sale of these photographs will be devoted to the education of Colored People in the department of the Gulf, now under command of Maj. Gen’l Banks.” The tour and photographs were the result of a joint effort by the Union military (specifically the Department of the Gulf under Maj. Gen. N.P. Banks) the American Missionary Association, and the National Freedmen’s Relief Association. The charitable organizations sold the cartes de visite to raise money for the education of former slaves in newly established schools in Louisiana.
