A complete and authentic issue of the Harper’s Weekly, September 30, 1865, 16pp., disbound, old professional tape mends on the margin of one page. From the interior is 1/4 page gruesom engraving, “View of Darlington Court House and the Sycamore Tree Where Amy Spain, the Negro Slave, Was Hung by the Citizens of Darlington South Carolina,” with a related report. Her crime ... when the Union Army scouts entered Darlington, Spain assumed she was free. Unfortunately the scouts left, the Confederates returned. She was tried, convicted and hung. Independent research determines that Amy Spain, owned by a prominent local lawyer and hero of the invasion of Mexico, Major A.C. Spain, was hung in March 1865. On the same page, a 1/3 engraving “The Freedman’s Village, Hampton, Virginia,” with a related report.
