A great Southern home front letter with great slave content, 2pp. 4to., written by Lucy D. Epperson, Clintonville, [Bourbon County, Kentucky], Nov. 5, 1864, to a certain Miss. Ivy Welton, Clay County, Missouri, reading, in part: "Aunt Neff is here today…she is very much dissatisfied…she is old and frail you no…they have divided the negroes and Mary got all but Jim and Harriet. They are hers. Grance went off to the army before they were divided and died so they did [not have any trouble with him. They are all hired out, nearly all the negroe men around here have gone to the army and a great many of them have got there freedom with powder and lead an some of them with disease. There has been a great many died without he fever and there has been a heap of negro women that have run off and gone to camp…the owners would not go after them and they get sick there. They [Federals] throug [throw] them in the river and so they get freedom to. The too Vanmeater boys are in prison yet…they had not a letter from Missouri for so long they were anxious to hear from there…for the present, Lucy D. Epperson".
