Good pair of war-date Union army field printed orders both, 1p. 8vo., "Headquarters, Dept. of the South, Hilton Head, S. C., Feb. 7, 1865," being General Orders No. 14, congratulating the Black troops on their fine conduct in battle, reading, in part: "The Major-General Commanding being compelled by wounds to relinquish…the command of the Department, takes the opportunity to express to the officers and men…his approbation of their good conduct during the operations on the line of the Charleston & Savannah Railroad…at the battle of Honey Hill, on November 30th…in the attempt to drive the enemy from his forts…retired from the field after nightfall in good order…their losses attest alike their courage and discipline. At Deveaux' Neck…on December 6th…met the rebels in an open field and drove them from the ground, capturing one flag…leaving their dead and wounded in our hands…on December 9th the skirmish line forced its way to within a few yards of the Rail Road and the forts…remaining there under a galling fire…the division has obeyed all orders promptly and cheerfully…since its co-operative movements with General Sherman's Army has vigilantly watched the enemy at its front…to Brigadier-General Hatch and Potter…and to all the gallant officers and men…the Major-General commanding tenders his thanks for the past and…wished for their continued success." Signed in type by Major General John G. Foster. Also included is a, 1p. 8vo., printed field order, "Headquarters, Dept. of the South, Hilton Head, S. C., Feb. 9, 1865," being General Orders No. 15 in which Foster announces that he has been granted leave of absence on account of his wounds. Both VG.
