Excellent content 2 ½ pp. letter, from E.P. Dodge to his brother, Troy, NY., January 22, 1866, with original transmittal cover. Dodge attends a lecture seeing Abolitionists Wendell Phillps and Frederick Douglass, reads in part "I have heard Wendell Phillips lecture again since I have been here. He is the best I ever heard, Oh! what eloquence! Last Sunday night I heard Fred Douglass the Negro orator, I suppose you have heard of him. He is "smart", not very black, however some white blood in him. I guess when he got the best and shouting and gesturing at a great rate a dog in the hall set up barking and made them all laugh. I could not help it! Last night I heard Rev. Mr. Milburne (a blind man) lecture upon "John Milton" the poet….The lecture was excellent and delivered very eloquently. He had to be lead in but after he began to speak you would not have thought of him being blind….I bought a ticket to the "Young Men's Association", and paid three dollars for it which admits me to lectures & library & now I can have all the books to read I have time for. I think Dr. Holland's Life of Lincoln from what I have heard of it to be very good and if it not for the exorbitant price asked for it….". The stationary has a printed date of 1865, but the letter actually dates from January 1866 as Holland's book about the life of President Lincoln had just been published. An amazing letter having references to Frederick Douglass not being very "Black" and having "White Blood in him". The letter has two closed tears at the top edge, folds from mailing, else fine.
