Autograph Letter Signed "Edgar Love", 4 pages, quarto, August 3, 1911, Tucson, Arizona to Lynn B. Taylor, Kennedy, New York. On August 28, 1862 Love enlisted in 7th Company, 1st New York Battalion of Sharpshooters, which was attached to the Army of the Potomac. After much combat duty and time in Confederate prisons, he was mustered out on June 7, 1865. Writing to his grandson, Love responds to the boy's queries about the war. He wrote in part: "...I've learned that young America advances now faster than when i was in that class...you asked some questions about my war experience which I will now endeavor to answer...That battle in charging across that old field partly grown up to small bushes was the 18 of June 1864 on the main defenses of Petersburg. In all of my 23 engagements including skirmishes that I passed through that was by far the most terrible...When I see you again I will tell you more about it if not too clost to dinner time...on my return from prison in the heart of Rebbeldom I crossed Cape Fear River into our lines...I was a walking skeleton...I was a prisoner nearly 8 months. I was confined in Libbie, Bell Island and Salisbury, N.C...so horrible, yes terrible...". With cover, VF condition.
