A great Virginia Citizen's letter concerning the impact that John Brown's raid upon the local Harpers Ferry population, 4pp. 8vo., written by the grandmother of Samuel J. C. Moore's wife, [n. p., but Georgetown, D. C.], Nov. 15, 1859, in part: "…you will pardon my seeming neglect…you know what has happened at Harpers Ferry and the state that poor Charlestown has been in for some time [since]…I take deep interest in that place as it contains what is very dear to me, my children…and my darling little grand children…I have been in so much trouble that I had not energy sufficient to even write. I was very much indisposed both in mind and body and could think of nothing but those who were exposed…I had dear Tom…on the way to C. Town and attacked by those miserable deluded creatures…I am afraid, dear Ellen, that the worst is not even yet, What does dear Tom think of it. Does he think there will be an effort mage to get those men out of jail. That is what I am dreading. Do ask him and let me know if you please…you would be amused to see me fastening up the house at night. Every window must have a nail in addition to the shutter. The beds must be looked under and the chimney looked up. They laugh at me very much for being so penetrating…I expect you had many fears too unless you were more of a Presbyterian than I am on this occasion…there is too much treachery in the world to trust man…have you been in Charlestown lately…how is Maria getting along. Does she seem to be frightened…". VG to near fine.
