BEAUREGARD, P.G.T. (1818 - 1893) Confederate major general who initiated the attack on Fort Sumter which started the Civil War. Autograph Endorsement Signed "GTB," on a 2pp., letter by a minister, John Clark to General Beauregard, Bellefair Mills, Stafford Co., Va., June 15, 1861, VG. In part, "I will thank you to send me a passport .... the Warren Rifleman and all his company have been in the habit of attending my ministry at Fort Royal. ...I have a son between 16 and 17 years ... anxious to volunteer ... but I have not given my consent because he is too small and weakly ... if you can make him useful in the cause of our Common Country and to yourself ..." Beauregard responds on the reverse "Give a pass - I see no reason why you should not take the cars if you deam it. I regret I have no need of the services of your son... GTB"
