ALEXANDER, George W. (1829-1895). At age 19, in1848, he was appointed assistant engineer in the United States Navy, and remained in the service until April 5, 1861, when he resigned. On the 15th of June 1861, he became a First Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 1st Maryland Zouaves (CSA). With great difficulty, the company made their way to Richmond and offered their services to Governor Letcher for the Confederacy He was captured and imprisioned at Fort McHenry he later escaped and made his way back to Richmond. Signed Voucher, 8-1/2” x 2-3/4”, “G.W. Alexander”, on voucher August 1, 1860 receiving Eighty-five dollars and eighty-one cents.
