War-date Confederate soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Joseph S. Lipe, Co. I, 7th North Carolina State Troops, [MWIA Gaines Mills, Va., 6/27/62, died 7/06/62], Bogue's Island, Carteret County, N. C., Sept. 12, 1861, in part: "When I wrote…last I was at Newbern. We left Newbern the next day…and we moved our camp to Fort Lane, about three miles below town on the same river…Mr. Isaac Harris…Dr. Beaty and M. M. Johnston came to see us …they stayed with us several days. we received orders to leave Ft. Lane…last Sabbath…they only gave us one hour and a half to pack up…we had our tents struck, our baggage packed and were at the rail-road waiting for the train. After a very rapid ride we reached Carolina City. We then took boats to cross Bogue's Sound to this place…our boats ran aground and at the same time a very heavy shower…fell upon us. We were in a very uncomfortable situation in the middle of the sound. Our boats aground…our clothes wet…and worse of all. We had no way to get out, only by wading or staying in the boat until midnight when the tide would rise. Some waded out and some staid on the boat. We all got to shore Monday morning and had to stay until Tuesday evening without our baggage. We were very hungry when our provisions came…this island is nothing more than a sand bank covered with grass and shuddery. There is a higher bank between us and the ocean which will make a good protection or fortress for us when the Yankees come to attack us…there is a good deal of sickness in the company…but no dangerous cases. Some are pretty bad off with the measles…your affectionate husband, Joseph Lipe…". Lipe's minor phonetic spelling has been corrected. VG
