War-date Confederate soldier's letter, 4pp. large folio, written by Pvt. Joseph S. Lipe, Co. I, 7th North Carolina State Troops, [MWIA Gaines Mills, Va., 6/27/62, died 7/06/62], "Rarteret (sic) County, Carolina City, N. C., Sept. 26, 1861", in part: "…I was in Beaufort…it tis about 8 miles from Carolina [City]. We had to go [with] six of them on a boat…that is the easiest way to travel…the boat man said that the water was about 30 feet deep…I saw a large English boat and I was all over it…it is a site to see…I seen spirits, turpentine, munitions and a great many other curious things…it aint no use to ask to go hoam for we don't know how soon we will have to fight. The Yankees is a daring us every day but we are smart enough for them. They want to find out our cannons distance but all we want is for them to land…Margaret…I want you to get out the cotton as soon you can. If the children needs shoes I want you the by them…I am at Carolina City now. I came to Carolina Sunday with Leroy…Carolina is about six miles from Camp Buequine…I must come to a close by saying to you and my dear children. If I never meat you on earth again I hope that we will be able by the help of god to meat in heaven…Until death/so far well". The original transmittal cover is included. Lipe then goes on to fill the remainder of the letter by giving advise to his wife and each one of his numerous children on how to maintain the family farm including picking cotton, ploughing the fields and preparing them for next season-he actually sounds as if pitting each one against the other to get the work done faster.
