War-date Confederate soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Joseph S. Lipe, Co. I, 7th North Carolina State Troops, [MWIA Gaines Mills, Va., 6/27/62, died 7/06/62], "Carolina City, Camp Argyle, N. C., Nov. 29-30, 1861," in part: "…I wanted you to send my overcoat for I need it…some of our company has got overcoats and all that I have seen are very good coats…the regiment is agoing to to move…ten miles nearer hoam rite on the side of the rail road at a place called Shepperdsville to put up tents for winter. I don't see sights of peace for Old Abe has ordered out two hundred thousand more men and if he wants he can order out as many more if he want[s]. I do wish that he would do something. They have got to make salt down here. I seen some of the salt today and it tis as pretty salt as I ever saw. It is white and fine and very strong…I took some more medicine last night and feel better…I would not be a nurse for fifty dollars a month but I would rather be a cook than to be at camp…write soon, J. S. Lipe". Lipe's minor phonetic spelling has been corrected. Some soiling, else VG
