War-date Confederate soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Private Michael Blackwell, 2nd Mississippi Infantry, enlisted May 1, 1861 and was killed in action at Gettysburg as was his brother William of the same regiment. This letter is 3pp. octavo, pencil, light, minor fold split, datelined Camp near Richmond, Virginia, July 24, 1862, and reads in part: “...I and brother is well at this time. Brother is on guard today, I expect he will write a letter by Lieut. Byrn...everything is quite around Richmond as far as I know. We still hold the enemy in check on the James River, we still get a few prisoners. Jackson is in the Valley again, I hope he will drive the invaders from that glorious land that is the best country in Va. I was in hopes that we would get to stay down there some time but we only staid there about three days....” More on a question his mother had about General Johnston being wounded. Signed in itials “MAPB.”
