A good war-date Confederate soldier's battle letter, 1p. legal size folio., written by Pvt. J. H. Sheperd, Co. G, 35th North Carolina Vols., Kinston, [N. C.], Mar. 30, 1862, in part: "…you wrote to me to know if I had any letter from Erastus. I haven't had any letter from him since I came to New Bern. I was in the fit two days. We the 35 R[eg.] went 15 miles below Newbern on Thursday nit to Fisher Landing. We remained until morning. When day cum I saw the fleet away down on the river and it look as like a field of old dead trees…about 9 o'clock I hurd the old bote blow sort of like a bull and the next thing was a cannon and here cum the bomb like a black devil and when it burst it made a ruckus like [a] clap of thunder…then I gone to look wide and far…it was boom, boom, boom boom…we'll [?] it a little while and we tuck to leave and we retreat[ed] to the Bores[?] work…the next morning about …day lite we let in and you had better look out if the balls didn't fly like harlots. I think there was fifty coming in a inch of me heel but I did not get touched. We fight about two hours when we had to retreat and we dun it rite two…direct to Kinston. Now more at this time, J. Sheperd". Sheperd was a very poor speller and we have corrected his phonetic spelling for continuity. We also know from the content of his letters that he was a member of Co. G, 35th North Carolina, but the CW Data base does not show his in their rolls. Light soiling, else VG
