The Daily Citizen. Vicksburg, Mississippi. July 2nd, 1863. 1 p. 48 cm. Wallpaper edition. The famous Vicksburg Wallpaper edition of "The Daily Citizen" including the "Note" dated July 4th, 1863 in which it is announced General Grant has "caught the rabbit." The Daily Citizen taunted Grant by stating that he had to capture the city before he could dine in it., stating, "The way to cook rabbit is first "catch the rabbit." Grant's troops upon raiding the offices of the "Daily Citizen" found the press still set up for July 2, so they left the date and added Grant's famous July 4th "Note" in the bottom right corner. This is a cornerstone to any fine Civil War collection featuring a note from the conqueror of the ever important Confederate port city, Vicksburg, Mississippi. Wallpaper on verso is a nice blue floral pattern, and bears a large inked imprint “PARKER’S EXPRESS COMPANY” and states that “This rebel stronghold having surrenderd to Gen. Grant and his indominable soldiers. Parkers Express Company announces readiness to transport Freight, Packages, Money & c. to and from all principal points in Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, INdiana [and] Kentucky...E.T. PHELPS, AGT. Vicksburg, July 15th, 1863.” Fine condition and the most unique version of this highly desired newspaper that we have seen.
