HOLMES, Theophilus Hunter(1804 - 1880), A friend and protégé of the Confederate President, Jefferson Davis, he was appointed commander of the Trans-Mississippi Department. He was promoted to Lieutenant General, on October 10, 1862, by Jefferson Davis.[4][4] During his time as commander of the Trans-Mississippi Department, Holmes failed to perform his most important duty: defend the Confederacy's hold on the Mississippi River.Letter Signed “I am, General, Yours very truly, T.H. Holmes, Maj. Genl, Cmdg,” 3pp., mounted, Hdqtrs Little Rock, Nov. 4th (1862), VG. Holmes is writing to General Hindman, in part “I have given orders relative to your supplies ... Curtis says in his official dispatch that in driving you to the Ark Bottom, he accomplished all he intended ... he will go to the Indian country to reestablish the fugitive loyal Indians. There is no doubt the Federals will make a strong effort both in the North West and from Mijssissippi. ... I have sent you about 4000 arms ... I am unwilling that the Indians be left without some responsible person’s presence to counteract any evil impression ... I could only send you $250,000. I shall in a few days probably send you $750,000 out of which I wish you to have the Indians as well as the white troops paid. ....”
