A good war-date Confederate officer's letter, 3 1/2pp., 8vo., written by Captain Edward Hall Armstrong, Co. G, 3rd North Carolina Vols., "Bivouac near Fredericksburg, [Va.], Feb. 3, 1863, to his father, in part: "…I must say that I am sorry to hear that you have left Swans Point. I hope…that the attack on Wilmington will miscarry and that you may soon be able to return home again. The Yankees attempted an advance here on the cult. but the roads being so bad they concluded it would not do so they gave it up. "Fighting Joe Hooker" commands the forces on the other side of the river now. I don't think that he will relish an advance before spring. If so we have entrenchments ready for them…Thom Armstrong is almost crazy to see his boy. He has made every effort but so far has been unsuccessful…since I last wrote we have been transferred from Doles Brigade, D. H. Hill's Division to Taliaferos Brigade, Jackson's Old Division. We have moved some nine miles from the RR now. The roads are miserable and it is almost impossible to get transportation for provisions. The cold weather don't suit Moses very well. He thinks if it is any colder north than it is here he would not stay there for his freedom…I sent up a furlough…it is quite doubtful…whether it will be granted…as they seem resolved to keep captains here at all hazards…Captain Rhodes is in New York [actually killed in action Antietam] and has partially recovered from his wounds…if he returns to duty he will take charge of the company which I now command and it will be necessary to transfer me somewhere else…my love to all…E. H. Armstrong".
