Good war-date Confederate soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Pinkney M. Lewis, Co. I, 17th Miss. Vols., and his brothers Benjamin [POW Berryville, Va., 9/3/64] and David [POW Chancellorsville, Va., 5/3/63], "Camp near Chattanooga, Tenn., Oct. 18, 1863", to their parents, in part: "…all things still quiet here…Bennie's exchange went through all right and he came to the Co. today so we are all together [again]. All of Co. I, 17 Miss. Vols., we are all well…you seem anxious to know what we want…[we want] one good overskirt a piece, 2 under shirts a piece of thin goods of a dark color, say calico. Benny wants a coat cut like the one he wore from home (Baker's fation [fashion]) and a pair of pants…Benny and David a pr of gloves a piece…your son etc., P. M. Lewis…an order has just been delivered allowing each man a forth days furlow that will get a recruit for his Co. and Regt so if you see any for me that wants to join the army please send him to me for I want to go home…this is one of the best Cos, Regts and Brigades in service…if you find a man that wants to go into a good branch of service this is the place just tell him…P. M. L. "Dear parents, As Pinkney writes I will write to let you know that I am still alive…I wrote in the last three letters…to send us a negro to do our cooking & washing & also advise you to take the others off & sell them before the Yankees take them from you…I hope you will send him up for he will be perfectly safe here…I fear the Yankees will take them all from you…nothing more, D. H. Lewis… "David Pinkney has riten you all the news…Bud Blassingame was at the hospital…this is about all I have to rite. Give my respects to all…your son until death, B. F. Lewis".
