Manuscript Report, 15-1/2” x 12-1/2”, sent to Lt. Ward, June 18th, 1864, listing 26 soldiers. The form has six columns to include; Soldiers name; Regiment; Company; Whereabouts or fate; Name of claimant; and Evidence. Ward was responsible for getting any monies due to the named relatives of those listed soldiers. The first seven names on list were deserters from the Confederate Army who had joined the Union Army. When these men were captured by Confederate General Pickett, he court marshaled them and hanged 22. This document lists five of those twenty-two. As example, “Calvin J. Hoffman, 2nd NCa (hanged), Co F., Capt’d at Beech grove. Hung at Kinston.” Those listed are Calvin Hoffman, Charles Cuthrell, Amariah Taylor, William Irving Hill, and Lewis Bryant. It also lists 10 captured at Beech Grove who were not hung. There are other outcomes such as “Killed at Plymouth,” “died of disease,” and “Died of fever”.In all, 53 of the 97 Second Union Volunteer Regiment soldiers fell into the hands of the Confederates, and deserters quickly identified. Pickett’s first court-martial happens at an encampment in Dover, and it was decided 27 men would be tried, while 26 others perfunctorily sent to prisoner-of-war camps.Of the 31 soldiers who went to prison instead of the gallows, 25 die in the POW camps, three were paroled and three are unaccounted.
