A complete and authentic issue of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated, November 5, 1864, 16pp., disbound, near fine. The two page center spread is captioned “Jeff Davis’s Speech at Macon, Georgia, Illustrated by Northern Artists for Southern Readers.” The Confederate President is in the center of the engraving, surrounded by 12 vignettes. All of the quotes that caption the illustrations are from the Davis Macon speech. The lampooning of Davis is severe. As example, the illustration of a woman marrying an empty sleeve has the caption “Young ladies always marry the empty sleeve.” And, the caption beneath a platoon arriving in Cuba, “I had sent Bragg with pontoons to cross into Cuba.” The speech is printed on a separate page.
