Document signed by former Mississippi Infantry (State troops) D.D. McLaurin, 8-1/4” x 6-1/2”, preprinted and filled out in manuscript, Jasper County, August 1, 1865, minor margin loss on right side else VG. In full, “I, D.D. McLaurin, do solemnly swear (or affirm) in the presence of Almighty God that I will hereafter faithfully support, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States and the union of the States thereunder; and that I will, in like manner, abide by and faithfully support all laws and proclamations which have been made during the existing rebellion with reference to the Emancipation of slaves. So help me God.” On May 29, 1865, President Andrew Johnson provided for amnesty and the return of property to those who would take an oath of allegiance. However, former Confederate government officials, officers with the rank of colonel and above from the Confederate army or lieutenant and above from the Confederate navy, and people owning more than $20,000 worth of property had to apply for individual pardons. Though it was difficult for ex-Confederates to ask for a pardon for something they did not believe had been wrong, thousands did ask for and receive amnesty from President Johnson.
