Good war-date Confederate soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Pinkney M. Lewis, Co. I, 17th Miss. Vols., "Camp 17 Miss. on the front near Richmond, Va., Jan. 15, 1865", in part: "…we first built quarters on the Garrett farm about 6 miles to our left from here. We went into quarters there about the 1st of Dec. remained in them about 3 weeks…Genl. Hoak [Hoke] was quartered where our division is now. The right of our division rests near to the front of Ft. Harrison. Our brigade is on the left of the division. Our cabins are built about 50 feet in rear of the line of works. There has been some talk of our Brigade being sent to Miss. to recruit…an effort has been made at Richmond in Congress [and] also a petition has been around band signed by every commissioned officer of the brigade…, 4 regiments, can muster about four hundred guns. A good many are being furloughed now…Mr. Foot, one of our congressman was arrested …about Fredericksburg, trying to make his way to Yankeedom. He was released on parole…a nice pass for our leading men. We have some talk of peace…Mr. Blair from Washington City is now said to be in Richmond trying to fix up a peace…I wish that they might come to some conclusion without any more fighting. I am tired of it…I have not heard from Benny yet [brother Bengamin F. Lewis, 1st Va. Cavalry, POW Berryville, Va., 9/03/64]…he was in 2d Division, 3d Ward, Camp Chase, Ohio. I have never received a letter directly from him, but one of Co. C, that was taken the same time wrote to his Lt. and stated that 3 of Co. I was there and that included all of our Co. that was taken…shugar & coffee has about played out. We have not drawn any for about a month…we draw 1 pound of tobacco for…either chewing or smoking though of an inferior quality…[we are] well clothed and shod…your most obedient son, etc, Pinkney M. Lewis…". Minor toning with archive tape repairs, else VG.
