Manuscript Letter Signed “J.A. Handley” Commander Camp David S. Creigh, Lewisburg, West Virginia, 1pp. September 12, 1917, adressed to “J.R. Meheu” it reads “I here enclose you a few names of COnfederate Veterans of Camp David S. Creigh, Lewisburg W.Va and make appliction for transportation and reservation to and during the National Memorial Reunion and Peace Jubliee in the Vicksburg National Military Park, October 16 to 19th 1917. No man as I am informed from the camp or section of the State has received either, and surely we are entitled to recognition and to participate in the appropriationg made for that purpose. Please let me hear from you at your earliest convenience. These old Veterans including myself will go, provided the transportation and reservation are furnished them...” Fine....plus; List of five men mentioned in the letter “Wm. R. Johnson [ who is listed as having killed a Union soldier and taking his horse as well as deserting to the Union forces at the end of the war] 14th Va. Cav., Alexander Johnston[ Paroled at Charleston, WV, 14th Va. Cav., J. Hunter Nickell [, 14th Va. Cav., S.H. Austin , 22 Va. Inf [also served 36th Infy & 20th Cav.], and J.M. Skaggs [POW at Cedarville], 14th Va. Cav. “The above named were soldiers in the Confederate States Army for at least three years.”. Fine...plus; “Application for Reservation at National Memorial and Peace Jubilee in Vicksburg Military Park, October 16 to 19, 1917” feilled out for John A. Handley and signed by him, certifying that “on my honor as a Civil War Veteran, that I served as a private in Company K Regiment of 14 Volunteer Cavalry from January 1862, until honorably discharged April 1865 at Appomattox, Virginia....” Fine.
