War-date Union soldier's letter, 2 1/2pp. 8vo., on patriotic stationery, by Pvt. John A. Yeckley (signed J. A. Y.), Co. E, 28th New York Vols., "Muddy Branch, Maryland, Nov. 15, 1861," in part: "…one of our company [Watson Wykoff] died in Baltimore on the 12th. I had a letter from Dan Dixon…giving a full account of Slab City [California] & the dance…it seems to be the opinions of the officers that we will go further south before long…we have sham fights every day. It is fine fun & good exercise but the boys get in earnest sometimes & go in on their nerve for a real one. We had one yesterday after we had shot away all of our ammunition they charged bayonet on us. One man got with a wad & hurt pretty bad & some four or five got cut pretty bad with [the] bayonet…". VG
