This grouping consists of THREE pieces from Edwin Stanton to Watson. The first, on War Department letterhead, is an Autograph Letter Signed “Edwin M. Stanton”, 2pp., October 19, 1866, in part, “The last congress directs me to appoint some one to prepare the official reports ... there are many applicants but none that suit me. ... If your health is sufficient, you could with my aid do the work better than anyone else ...” ...plus, The second is a Document Signed “Edward M. Stanton” on War Department letterhead, July 30, 1867, being an original manuscript order in part, “That pursuant to the annexed Joint Resolution, number 70 approved ... Peter H. Watson be and is hereby appointed to arrange and prepare for publication, the official documents relating to the rebellion ...” the printed resolution No. 70 is attached. ...plus, The Third is is a Manuscript Letter Signed “Edward M. Stanton” on War Department letterhead, August 2, 18671pp., which in small part, “the adjutant general of the army of the United States is hereby directed to deliver to the said Watson, whenever he shall call for the same, such official correspondances ... as may be required by him for the aforesaid pupose.”
