A rare war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on patriotic stationery, by Musician Conrad William Betts, 29th Illinois Vols., Camp Cairo, Nov. 15, 1861 to his further wife, Ellen M. Sherman, in part: "I am still with those who are alive…since writing you we have passed through a scene that tried the heart of soldiers. The boys of this brigade had a desperate Battle Nov. 7th at belmont, Missouri. They were defatted and many who I had formed acquaintances with were hurried to their long home. I can imagine the horrid sight of a battle field, but could you look on one you would find that you had formed a very distant idea…yours, C. W. B." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Near fine.
