A good group of six (6) war-date letters, totaling 16 pages, written by Pvt. George W. Morris, Co. K, 39th Penn. Vols. (10th Reserves) dated between February 1862 and March 1863 concerning their military experiences while part of the McDowell's Corps, in small part: "…[Camp Pierpont, Va., Feb. 7, 1862]…I would take you through the camp an show you what kind of houses Uncle Sams boys live in…I will lay side by side with our revolutionary sires. They died to introduce this free government. I will die to perpetuate the same…[Camp Pierpont, Va., Feb. 21, 62]…there will be a grand move made tomorrow…we will go to Centreville…there is twenty thousand rebels there…they have the place well fortified…we don't care a damn for that…we had a little trial at Dranesville and we gave them hell…if the damn cowards had not run we would have killed every damn one…[Catlett Station, Va., May 1, 62]…we are going to start to Fredericksburg…we have been doing some hard marching…[Fredericksburg, June 5, 62]…for my part I would like to get into a fight. I would try to kill some of the damned shits if they would get out of my way. I shot at one the last time we were out on picket but he was to[o] far of and I did not hit humbug he was like a son of a bitch…I came very close to him…help you drink some of that dye tea. It is very scarce here and what we do get we have to pay one dollar and fifty cents per quart and that is a little steep for me…[near Richmond, June 21, 62]…we are now laying…three miles from Richmond…in a few days…we will have that place…I went out…to a farm house and asked them what they would take for a chicken and they bold me seventy five cents…I told them that I would not pay…so I went…and shot one and got it for nothing…[Miner's Hill, March 9, 63]…we have got back to Washington City and I don't think they will take us back to the front as our division is so badly cut up…". Most include their original stamped transmittal covers with the most interesting one having a patriotic design, entitled: "The Champion's Belt", printed in red, showing Lincoln attempting to reconcile the North, South East and West. Overall VG.
