A great pair of Union U. S. Naval seaman's letters, totaling 4pp. 4to., written by Sailor Carlos E. Noyes, USS Minnesota, June 6, 1862 and Jan. 20, 1863, both on "U. S. Flag Ship Minnesota" stationery. First, dated June 6, 1862, was written from Norfolk, Va., on a finely illustrated letterhead showing the Minnesota at anchor, reading, in part: "…we have been up here about a week…the folks are most Sesech. We lay clost to the city between Norfolk and Portsmouth…that we can throw a stone on shore…when the band plays at night. The dear young ladies come down to the wharf to listen. I will send you a paper printed here called the Norfolk Union…it is printed by two soldiers and the Norfolk boys call it the Yankee liar…the blockade is off this Port now…". The second letter is written from Newport News, Va., on "U. S. Flag Ship", stationery, Jan. 20, 1863, reading, in part: "…they expect the Merrimac down but I do not think she will ever come because there is four iron clads here besides three or four wooden ships…I had a goo time on New Years…I was put in the Brig early in the morning in double irons for little or nothing and stayed three days. That was the first time I have been punished…there was the biggest part of our crew runaway in Boston and we took the draft out of the Receiving ship and the granest set of me you never saw…". Both VG.
