A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Marquis L. Holt (signed M. L. H.), Co. E, 3rd New Hampshire Vols., Hilton Head, South Carolina, Jan. 16, 1862, in part: "…the next day our regiment took a trip over to Sea Brook [most likely William Seabrook elaborate plantation on Edisto Island]…it is a very pretty place but there are now buildings [that] only…belong to two plantations…the channel is very narrow…there was 2 schooners and a ship there unloading coal for…coaling the gunboats…there is a meeting house where the negroes hold their meetings…the balloon which was sent here arrived and they have filled it with gas and [has] been up …but so they could see the Rebels…some of the New York Engineers went up to Fort Pulaski to raise the blockade which the Rebels sunk…they brought back 2 rebel prisoners which they caught while out duck hunting. They were very successful in opening the channel…the boys play ball a great deal…we have a tiptop place to play just as level and smooth as can be. Sometimes there will be 4 or 5 different games of ball at a time where there [is] a thousand men and boys together…". The original transmittal cover is included. VG
