War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Marquis L. Holt (signed M. L. Holt), Co. E, 3rd New Hampshire Vols., Hilton Head, South Carolina, Feb. 23, 1862, in part: "…last night I was on police guard…we had to go down to the Head and try and find some liquor which some of the carpenters had…we came to a piece of oil cloth that was spread on the floor…raising this up and tearing up a board in the floor we found a cask which held about 5 gallons…this morning the man that owned the whiskey came into the Provo and gave himself up and he was put into the prison…the soldiers have got to calling this the Rip Raps…it is a pretty hard place for folks…we have got a couple of gamblers here with a chain and ball on their legs. The balls are…as big as your head and of solid iron…there is a number of prisoners come in every day. There is about a hundred and forty here now…they have been firing a salute in honor of Washington's birth day from the fort…and from the Flag ship Wabash…I should like to have you see one of the Monitors which came here…she ran up close to the wharf…see looks as though she could do something…the vessels of war that lay in this harbor…are worth seeing…I want to see Charleston and the forts in that harbor in our hands…". Near fine.
