War-date Union soldier's letter, 5 1/4pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Marquis L. Holt (signed M. L. Holt), Co. E, 3rd New Hampshire Vols., [N. p., but Braddock's Point, Hilton Head, South Carolina], July 23, 1862, in part: "…we are waiting anxiously for news from McClellan for on that…our hopes and I prey that he may be successful…I should like a bottle of camphor for it is very good here…send it dissolved in liquor for we cannot get liquor here…if you can find any of B. O. & G. C. Wilson's Neuropathic drops I wish you would send a couple bottles of it is a valuable medicine out here…if any of the girls are out of employment they might make up 2 or 3 pair of shirts…for I can get 5 dollars a pair for them…buy these things and what I do not need and sell, I will forward the money…to you…there is one thing more…and that is some caps to go on my revolver. Get 2 or 3 boxes of the smallest…the boys will pay more for stuff that comes from home than they will for such as they find around here. We have to pay awful prices for what stuff we buy down to head quarters and that is the reason that I send home for what I want…". VG
