War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp. Marquis L. Holt (signed M. L. Holt), Co. E, 3rd New Hampshire Vols., Hilton Head, South Carolina, Dec. 25, 1862, in part: "…we have a detail to work on a large magazine which they are building and a detail to work [at] the boat yard building launch boats…the number of men from each company to the magazine and boat yard is 3 or 4 to each…we have been down on the beach to drill…we can look off…and see the ships and steamers as they approach and leave the harbor…the report is that burnside has resigned and that we have got defeated again on the Potomac…before long one or the other side will have to give up…all that is lacking is generals and until we find someone that is competent to lead us we must not look for success…if we stay here we are going to build a meeting house…our captain is Richard Ela [KIA Drewry's Bluff, Va., May 13, 1864] of Concord. Our lieutenant is D. J. Flanders of Nashua. We have no 1st Lieut. with us…". The original transmittal cover is included. Both VG
