An Issue of a Scarce Union Occupied Newspaper, the Newbern Progress, April 16, 1862, 4pp., never bound, never trimmed. There are several reasons for the scarcity of this issue. First, it is printed on necessity paper, likely corn husk. The editor makes a notice on the second page, “Our paper is slightly reduced in size as we have not yet received any white stock from the North. Until it arrives we have to conform to circumstances and use such stock as we can obtain.” Second, while under Federal control, there are still slave advertisements such as “Negroes Wanted - wishes to hire fifty negroes ...”, and “Taken Up and committed to jail...a mulatto man ... says he is a free negro ...” Third, as one would expect, the war reporting is clearly Federal. As example, “Great Battle at Pittsburg Tenn., A Great Federal Victory”; and, “Order Givinng Thanks for the Recent Victory Over the Rebels.”
