Great albumen print of GENERAL WILLIAM F. BARRY WITH FOREIGN OFFICERS AT YORKTOWN from an original negative by Gibson taken at Yorktown during the Peninsular Campaign in 1862, published by Taylor and Huntington, 1889. Barry, Chief of Artillery during the Campaign, is shown at the center of the photograph with two French noblemen and several British officers attached to the Army of the Potomac as observers. Image measures 3" x 3 ¾" and is mounted on gray cardstock, (overall 3 ¾" x 4 ½"). Taylor and Huntington obtained thousands of Civil War negatives from the studios of Civil War photographers including Matthew Brady and Alexander Gardner. They are best known for a large number of stereoviews from the war which they printed and published in the 1880s as a series: "The War for the Union." They also published a number of individual images which were sold by subscription including this one which was published in 1889. GENERAL WILLIAM F. BARRY (1818-1879) graduated from West Point in 1838 and served in the Mexican War and the Seminole War. During the Civil War he fought at Bull Run, was McClellan's Chief of Artillery during the Peninsular Campaign and was Chief of Artillery for the Defenses of Washington (1862-1864) and served as Sherman's Chief of Artillery during the Atlanta Campaign.
