A complete and authentic issue of the Harper’s Weekly, July 12, 1862, 16pp., disbound, VG. From the interior, a 1/2 page engraving, “CONTRABANDS ESCAPING TO THE UNITED STATES BARK "KINGFISHER," OFF THE COAST OF FLORIDA” shows six slaves in a navagting a small boat to the Union blockade ship. In a related report, thye details are provided, in part “... They were six in number, almost entirely in a nude state. They state that they ran away some months ago, and had subsisted on what wild hog they could run down, and the roots and herbs that grew around in the bush and swamp. Their sail consisted of an old flannel blanket, and the old coat at the mast-dread signified, I presume, a flag of truce. ...” There are also two Winslow Homer engravings, fullpage 'The Surgeon at Work in the Field during an Engagement' and yet another Homer centerspread 'A Bayonet Charge.' And, a unique cartoon on the back page supporting General Butler’s ‘Woman’s Order’ with caption “THE LADIES OF NEW ORLEANS before GENERAL BUTLER'S Proclamation,” showing women spitting in the soldier’s faces. Then in the next frame, “After GENERAL BUTLER'S Proclamation,” politely nodding.
