War-date father's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Homer Sackett, Warren, [CT], May 8, 1864, to his son Augustine Sackett, in part: "…I have attended meeting as usual but with increased interest 4 persons were united with their church…Mr. Bassett is faithful to his calling…in his prayer…he dwelt much on the cause in which our country are engaged, the great effort that is now being made to subdue this most unjustifiable rebellion…he prays for increased courage and strength…such unparalleled treachery and barbarity seems too much to be endured…the cause in which you are engaged is one of the greatest importance…I feel a personal interest. If our government is overthrown it seems that all was gone. Where most is at stake there we must put our greatest energy. It is for you that I am anxious may God save you…the Rebs have some hard customers in the water of N. Carolina but now the greatest move is for Richmond. Banks had disappointed us with his army after much success formerly…may the eastern army after many reverses be victorious…most truly yours, Homer Sackett". The original stamped transmittal cover, addressed: "Augustine Sackett, 2nd Asst. Engineer, US Str. Mattabasett, North Atlantic Blockading Squadron", is included. Near fine.
