War-date father's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Homer Sackett, Warren, Conn., June 6, 1864, to his son Augustine Sackett, in part: "…you have a dangerous customer [in] the Albermarle but she seems…shy of you. I can hardly see why. Her heavy shot must tell where they go. This is a time of the greatest interest to us all. So far Grant and Butler are doing well. I hope the prison doors of Richmond may soon be opened and our famished distressed soldiers be delivered from there barbarous foe…the Conn. 2nd H. Artillery are now guarding supplies for the army on the Pamunkey river. Homer sent me a few lines when at Fredericksburg complaining some of fatigue…am doing what I can ot sustain the Union which is the duty of every loyal person…your affectionate father Homer Sackett". The original stamped transmittal cover, addressed: "Augustine Sackett, 2nd Asst. Engineer, USN, US Steamer Mattabasett, North Atlantic Blockading Squadron", is included. Near fine.
