War-date Connecticut home front letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by a certain George M. Kellogg, Warren, [CT], June 30, 1864 to his friend Augustine Sackett, in part: "…the 2nd Regt have been in action. The Warren boys came out [all] right but they have lost their Colonel. I am inclined to think he was to rash for a commander. Some think he was under the influence of liquor & if so such a man is unfit for a post of responsibility. On the whole I do not think he was so much of a loss the Reg as he might have been. We have had too many such officers & how many lives have been sacrificed by drunken officers…undoubtedly enough. The Reg done honor to itself & is spoken of berry highly. A Gen. was heard to remark that they had not learned to be afraid of bullets. I think…they will never learn. I had read the graphic account of the Sassucus's encounter with the ram [on May 5 in which the USS Sassucus captured the CSS Bombshell]…I have taken pains to read the account you gave me to some of my friends which sets the whole matter right…yours, Geo. M. Kellogg". The original stamped transmittal cover, addressed: "Mr. Augustine Sackett, 2nd Asst. Eng., USS Mattabasett, North Atlantic Blockading Squadron", is included. Near fine.
